President Mauricio Macri appears to have come out on top after his first — and much-anticipated — meeting with the leaders of the country’s largest labour unions yesterday.

The unions left the Pink House with the promise of a bill to raise the income tax floor and an increase in the school-supplies benefit programme, which appears to be part of a clear playbook to prevent workers from demanding a wage hike of more than 25 percent.

“The government and the unions were in agreement on almost everything,” celebrated Cabinet Chief Marcos Peña after the meeting, although labour leaders insisted that they did not receive a specific offer from Macri.
