Algodon Wine Estates hosts "Wines of San Rafael, Terroir with History" at Algodon Mansion, Buenos Aires

Algodon Mansion, in a joint venture with Bodegas of San Rafael, recently hosted "Wines of San Rafael, a Terroir with History".  With the hope of promoting awareness among the press, industry leaders and consumers, the 2nd annual event shined a spotlight on San Rafael’s rich winemaking history and aptitude for producing high-quality Argentina wines.  The event attracted more than 600 people throughout the day and, including Algodon Wine Estates, showcased the wineries of Casa Bianchi, Bodega Goyenechea, Bodega Alfredo Roca, Bodega La Abeja, Bodega LJW, Bodega Argana, Bodega Suter, Bodegas Lavaque, Bodega Jean Rivier, Finca Dinamia, Bodega Iaccarini, Finca Martha, Bodega Fabricio Orlando Wines, Bodega Bombal y Aldao y Bodega Marc Zunino.

"The concept behind this event is to present the collective identity of San Rafael’s wineries,” Ignacio Goldin, Algodon Wine Estates’ Wine Sales & Wine Marketing Manager, recently told STG Consulting Group.  “As we position the Algodon brand in the world market, we are as a matter of course positioning our wine region as well.  Consumers have a desire to understand a wine region’s unique identity, and it is our responsibility, collectively as San Rafael winemakers, to help articulate and promote that identity as best we can.”

“We are very pleased that this year’s participants included 14 San Rafael wineries, and our goal is to eventually expand our association’s membership to 50 or more wineries that reside there.  One thing that unites us all is our shared history.”

There are still many old San Rafael family wineries that actively have three generations working to produce their wines. In order to stay successful, these businesses have had to adapt with the times to meet modern consumer demands, without having given up the traditional winemaking techniques that make them unique.  These family owned wineries, and their reputation for craftsmanship that has been passed down for generations, is still a distinct attribute of the region. 

The event was sponsored by the Municipality of San Rafael, Argentina Sommelier Association, the Wine Fund of Mendoza, Bodegas de Argentina, the Argentina Wine Corporation, Específica de Bodegueros de la Cámara de Comercio Industria, and Agriculture of San Rafael.

About San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina

The city of San Rafael is over two hundred years old, and its winemaking history dates back to around the 1880s.  It is home to some of Argentina’s most iconic wines, and is in fact one of the few regions in Argentina to achieve official status of Denominación de Origen Controlada (Controlled Denomination of Origin).  This status, which experts refer to as D.O.C., forces San Rafael winemakers to maintain a high quality of wines and helps to protect the region’s winemaking name and reputation.

Part of San Rafael’s winemaking reputation lies in the fact that the region benefits from a unique advantage specific to its geography. Nestled in the southern heart of Mendoza, the region’s farmlands are fed by natural tributaries and manmade canals diverged from the Diamante and the Atuel Rivers, both of which are sourced from the purest glacial runoff of the snowcapped Andes Mountains. These pristine irrigational waters have had a remarkably beneficial effect on the soil conditions of the region’s many farms and vineyards.

San Rafael also boasts some of the region's most breathtaking scenery and with over 330 days of annual sunshine, its unique landscape and semi-arid, mild climate attracts a wealth of tourism.  San Rafael’s proximity to the Andes Mountain Range provides a treasure of activities in the form of boating, windsurfing, jet skiing, whitewater rafting, and recreational fishing on the region’s many lakes, as well as access to the best skiing in South America, Las Leñas.  Other exciting local activities include exploring Argentina’s extraordinary wine route, horseback riding, hiking, mountain climbing and biking, four-wheeling, zip lining, mineral baths, and a host of other adventures for thrill seekers and explorers.   These attributes do not go unappreciated by San Rafael’s large community of sport enthusiasts and outdoor loving locals.

San Rafael is also rich in food culture, and its many restaurants are known for their traditional Argentine and Mendocino-style cuisines.  The farm-to-table movement is a well-established way of life in an agricultural city such as San Rafael.  In addition to vineyards, the region’s climate makes it ideal for growing a wide variety of crops including olives, walnuts, peaches, plums, pears, apricots, quinces.
